Reports revealed that Emmy-winning actor John Lithgow is in final talks to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter TV series.

If Lithgow ends up signing on to the project, he would be following in the footsteps of the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who played him in the original film series.

HBO said in a statement regarding the casting report, "We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals."

Lithgow is known for his numerous starring roles in film, TV, and stage throughout many decades including the recent Oscar Best Picture nominee Conclave and the recently canceled FX series The Old Man.

While he is an American actor, he has played British characters in his celebrated career including Sir Winston Churchill in The Crown where he won an Emmy.

Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance was previously being eyed to play the iconic character, but he ended up passing on the offer.

Who Else is Starring in the Harry Potter TV Series?

So far, no other actors have officially been cast in HBO's Harry Potter series.

The roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are all expected to be played by newcomer actors.

Paapa Essiedu is reportedly in talks to take on the role of Severus Snape, following in the footsteps of the late Alan Rickman.

Other actors who are rumored to be in consideration are Sharon Horgan and Rachel Weisz (Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall) and Brett Goldstein (Rubeus Hagrid). Cillian Murphy is also a popular choice amongst fans for the role of Voldemort.
