HBO has officially renewed the TV series adaptation of Harry Potter for a second season ahead of its highly anticipated premiere later this year.

While there were already expectations that the series would run for seven seasons, fans are still wondering whether the series will be greenlit for a second season before the first episode even airs, and audiences will be able to weigh in on the new version. Fortunately, HBO has already made an early decision for the future of the project.

Reports confirmed that HBO has officially renewed the Harry Potter TV series for a second season, just as the first season is nearing the end of filming.

As expected, the second season will cover Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling's series. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall ahead of the Christmas release of the TV series.

Jon Brown, who served as one of the writers of the first season, has been elevated to co-showrunner for the second season alongside Francesca Gardiner, who serves as the main showrunner.

The renewal for the second season should not come as a surprise, since the writing process has already started, and it's been HBO's plan all along for the project to last for seven seasons and cover each book of the Rowling novels.

"The plan is to still try and get it — I don’t know if it’s going to be like stop shooting Season 1 on Friday and start Season 2 on Monday. There’ll be a break in there, but we’re going to do whatever we can to not have a huge gap," Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, said in a November 2025 interview.

The show is avoiding a huge gap between filming seasons because the young actors are growing up fast, and they have to balance the series's complex filming schedule.

What to Expect in HBO's Harry Potter Series

The first season of HBO's Harry Potter series will cover the first novel in J.K. Rowling's book series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It will consist of eight episodes.

According to the logline: "There is nothing special about Harry Potter - at least that's what his Aunt Petunia always says. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship, and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past."

The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and many more.

The series will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas 2026. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
