The Dragon Ball franchise has gotten lots of video games over the past decades. Of the many games though, Extreme Butoden continues to be a popular one for fans. So, will Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden ever get a remaster or a full remake?

When it comes to Dragon Ball fighting games, fans are probably familiar with FighterZ which was released back in 2018. Before FighterZ though, Extreme Butoden captured fans’ attention, and their hearts.

All About Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden: Gameplay Explained

You’ll be forgiven if you’re not familiar with Extreme Butoden as this game is a Nintendo 3DS exclusive that was released back in October 2015 in the US. It is part of the Butoden fighting game sub-series which began back in 1993.

Even though it got mixed reviews from critics when it launched, the game has become a cult hit among fans thanks to its huge roster of over 100, from popular characters like Goku and Vegeta to lesser-known characters.

What’s more, the fighting game mechanics of Extreme Butoden along with its flashy Ultimate Attacks has continued to make it a favorite among fans in the know.

In recent years, it has seen a bit of a resurgence, especially from the FighterZ fanbase. That’s because this game is also developed by FighterZ’s studio, Arc System Works.

Unlike more modern Dragon Ball games which get released on multiple platforms, Extreme Butoden has only ever been released on the Nintendo 3DS.

This means the game is only playable officially on the 3DS. Players will also need a physical copy of the game if they want to play it now officially. That’s because the 3DS eShop has been discontinued on March 27, 2023.

As there’s no way of getting the game digitally, many are hoping to see a remaster or even a remake of it in the future.

Dragon Ball games don’t often get remakes, so the chances of this 3DS game getting a proper remake are quite low. As for a remaster, that’s also not likely to happen given how niche the game still is.

There is hope that the game gets ported to modern consoles. After all, there’s precedent for this as the original Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden for the SNES was released for the Switch as a pre-order bonus for FighterZ.

In the meantime, fans who want to play this game officially can only do so by tracking down a physical copy of the game.
