Ever since Disney+ was launched back in 2019, a lot of new Star Wars and MCU projects have been released in the service which is considered as an expansion of the respective franchises aside from the already-successful theatrical releases.
However, at the same time, there have also been some concerns surrounding the decline of the quality of their content as they are more spread out than ever and the reception has been more mixed.
It also doesn't help that the box office of their recent theatrical releases hasn't been as high as what Disney is hoping for as they are still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their business.
There have been reports lately that claimed that Disney and its studios have been reevaluating their content plans and strategies as the company itself is facing a major financial hurdle.
Now, the CEO of Disney himself has publicly chimed in and shared his thoughts surrounding the changes that are coming in their franchises.
Disney is Cutting Back on Star Wars and Marvel Content
In an interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked whether they are pulling back on Star Wars and Marvel content and he confirmed that they are indeed planning to cut down the number of projects that they are producing.
He explained that the plan is all part of their cost-cutting measure and they intend to spend and produce less content.
"You pull back not just to focus, but also as part of our cost containment initiative. Spending less on what we make, and making less," Iger said.
With the reports surrounding the franchises' future and the company's recent moves such as the massive layoffs and removing content from both Disney+ and Hulu, it's not surprising to hear Iger's plans for the two properties.
It also doesn't help that the recent theatrical MCU releases haven't been as successful as the Infinity Saga where most of them reached the billion-dollar mark. The viewerships for the shows haven't also been as high as what they're hoping for.
It's no secret as well that the increase of subscribers on Disney+ has been slower than what the company projected and, in the long run, there's no decent financial return if they spend a lot for content.
We should be able to see the long-term effect of this new strategy in the coming months or years as they are currently implementing the cost-cutting measure plan.
