Russell T Davies has set the record straight about why he left Doctor Who after serving as the show's showrunner from 2005 to 2010 and again from 2023 to 2026.

After the BBC announced the cancellation of the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special, Russell T Davies revealed that he would once again step away from the long-running franchise.

Because Disney had recently ended its partnership with the series, many fans linked Davies' departure to the split, speculating that the collaboration's challenges may have influenced his decision.

The rumors soon escalated, with some suggesting there had been behind-the-scenes tensions or internal conflicts.

However, in a new interview, Davies said his exit was far less dramatic than many had assumed.

"Time to move on, that's all," he told Mirror.

The screenwriter stressed that he harbored no ill will toward the BBC or anyone involved with Doctor Who. Instead, he said he is eager to focus on new creative projects.

Among them is a dance adaptation of his acclaimed Channel 4 drama It's a Sin. He's also celebrating the success of Tip Toe.

"I just had Tip Toe go out. And there's the It's A Sin stage show, the dance show that's coming out in February. It's quite strange with dance shows, with theatre shows, because they have lots of launches," he said. "It's in Manchester in February, then it goes to Cardiff in June, then it's Sadler's Wells in the autumn. So it keeps launching. I feel excited."

Doctor Who

With the cancellation of the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special and the departures of Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf, fans have been left wondering what's next for the beloved British sci-fi series.

"After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and [production company] Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode," the announcement read.

So, does this mean Doctor Who has been canceled?

The short answer is no. While the Christmas special has been scrapped and both Davies and Bad Wolf are moving on, the series itself is not ending.

Instead, the BBC has confirmed it plans to "invest in the long-term future of the show" by putting the franchise out to competitive tender in search of a new production studio.

The network said the move is intended to ensure "that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory."

Despite stepping away, Davies also expressed optimism about the show's future.

"You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you'll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it!" he wrote on Instagram. "Now I'm as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It's all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who, exciting and unpredictable and new! Here comes the future, vworp vworp."

For now, one thing is certain: although there will be no new episodes or Christmas special this year, Doctor Who is far from over. As BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt put it, "the Doctor is not going anywhere."
