  • Quick Answer: Erik Per Sullivan is not returning because he has retired from acting and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature at Harvard University.

Erik Per Sullivan reportedly declined a lucrative deal to reprise his role as Dewey in the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival, Life’s Still Unfair, according to Jane Kaczmarek, who returns as Lois Wilkerson.

The four-episode revival will bring back the beloved 2000s sitcom, with original stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Kaczmarek returning more than 20 years after the show ended.

So, is there no chance for fans to see Per Sullivan as Malcolm’s younger brother again?

The creatives behind Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair reportedly tried everything to lure Erik Per Sullivan out of acting retirement, including offering him “buckets of money.”

In an interview with The Guardian, Jane Kaczmarek revealed, “He is studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’”

The former actor is focused on his literature studies at Harvard and, by all appearances, has no plans to take a break from his education to return to acting.

Per Sullivan retired from acting in 2010 after his last appearance in the movie Twelve to concentrate on his studies. After attending USC, he is now reportedly pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature at Harvard University.

For starters, Per Sullivan originally played Dewey Wilkerson in Malcolm in the Middle for seven seasons, from 2000 to 2006.

In the revival, he will be replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, making Per Sullivan the only original cast member not returning for Life’s Still Unfair.

Of course, Frankie Muniz returns to lead the Malcolm in the Middle revival, reprising his role as Malcolm Wilkerson, alongside his on-screen parents, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, as Hal and Lois Wilkerson.

Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield also return as Malcolm’s brothers, Francis and Reese, while Emy Coligado reprises her role as Francis’ wife, Piama.

The show introduces Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as the youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly, who were seen only as a baby/toddler (Jamie) or not at all (Kelly) in the original series.

Additionally, Keeley Karsten joins the revival as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, and Kiana Madeira plays his girlfriend, Tristan.

Life’s Still Unfair follows Malcolm as he returns to his family’s orbit to celebrate Hal and Lois’ 40th anniversary party after they insist on his presence.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres on April 10 on Hulu.
