The Wilkersons are back! But this time, Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) has his own family in the revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.
The newly released trailer features a reunion between Muniz and Bryan Cranston, who reprises his role as Malcolm’s father, Hal – proving much of the original cast will return.
However, not everyone will be back for the limited four-part series. So here are the stars who will (and won’t) return in the Malcolm in the Middle reboot.
Bryan Cranston
Malcolm in the Middle would not feel the same without Bryan Cranston. Returning as the lovably clueless dad Hal, he will once again be seen wearing the character’s signature patterned shirts.
“Seeing the family was the best part,” he told IndieWire. “It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and each person.”
Jane Kaczmarek
Of course, the family reunion would not be complete without Wilkerson matriarch Lois, once again played by Jane Kaczmarek.
A key anchor of the original show’s dynamic, the fierce and unforgettable mom always balanced the chaos within the family. Now that she’s back in action, expect her sharp humor to return as well.
Frankie Muniz
Muniz will once again make viewers fall in love with Malcolm’s intelligence and awkward charm in the reboot.
Now an adult with a daughter of his own, Malcolm will experience family chaos firsthand as a father himself.
“I wondered for so long, ‘What was Malcolm up to? What’s his family up to?’” he told Us Weekly. “I think [we] get some good answers.”
Christopher Masterson
Family chaos would not be complete without the rebellious oldest brother, Francis. And there’s no better choice to play him than original actor Christopher Masterson.
Behind-the-scenes photos have confirmed Masterson’s return in the revival, adding another dynamic layer to the Wilkerson family.
Justin Berfield
Justin Berfield is also returning as Reese. Fans will once again see the tough-talking, food-loving middle brother they grew up with.
It will be a must-see to find out whether Reese has stayed the same or grown up a little. It has been 20 years, after all – so there’s hope for some improvement.
Emy Coligado
Completing the lineup of returning original cast members is Emy Coligado. With Francis’ wife back, viewers can expect the same spunky energy from Piama as the family comedy continues.
Erik Per Sullivan
Unfortunately, Erik Per Sullivan will not return as Dewey. It was confirmed that the role has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the part.
After retiring from acting years ago, Per Sullivan declined to return to the show. With Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the role, he has big shoes to fill, and viewers are hopeful he can do justice to an adult Dewey.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is set to release on April 10, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+.
