Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy recently opened up about the origins of the movie's infamous "Marvel Jesus" line.
The MCU film has been breaking several box-office records since its release in theaters and, as a result, it became an actual "Marvel Jesus" as it put the franchise back on track after years of underwhelming reception.
As most fans who have seen the film know, the film was relentlessly poking fun at the current state of the MCU and joked that Deadpool might be the messiah that the franchise needs.
Shawn Levy on How Deadpool & Wolverine's 'Marvel Jesus' Line Came About
In a recent interview, Levy was asked whether they came up with the "Marvel Jesus" line in Deadpool & Wolverine as a response to the underwhelming reception of the recent MCU releases.
He revealed that they conceived the line before the superhero fatigue conversation became more talked about and the negative headlines regarding the box office of some of the recent films. The timing was purely coincidental.
"I will say that, definitely what I do know because we've spoken about this, we wrote that line long before there was such a loud conversation about superhero fatigue," the director explained.
"And I think that was before Quantumania came out, before The Marvels came out. So the fact that it ended up fitting into this narrative and this cultural moment? That was coincidental."
Whether the timing of the line at this particular time in the MCU was coincidental or not, it still speaks about the significance of Deadpool's arrival in the franchise and we're seeing signs right now that the prophecy has become truer than ever.
Fortunately for everyone involved in the film, it all paid off as it has now become the top-grossing R-rated movie in the domestic box office, surpassing The Passion of the Christ.
It remains to be seen whether we will see more of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the future of the MCU, but one thing fans hope is that "Marvel Jesus" will continue to rise above the ashes in the next few years.
Deadpool & Wolverine is showing in theaters everywhere.
