In its second weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine has snagged an impressive box office record for R-rated movies.

According to a report, with its $395.6 million gross in North America so far, the MCU film is now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically, surpassing Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.

It also has a total worldwide gross of $824.1 million as of today, and it is on track to cross the billion-dollar mark within the next few days.

There is no doubt that this is massive news for the Marvel movie, having already defied the expectations and limitations of its R rating. The success of Deadpool and Wolverine also signifies a major win for the franchise, whose recent box office performance has been lacklustre.

It also helps that the film appealed to audiences' nostalgia, with a 2000s-inspired soundtrack and a plethora of surprise cameos.

For now, let's wait and see how it plays out for the next few weeks but so far all signs point to a sustained box office performance, meaning and Marvel Jesus, as fans have dubbed it, will continue to rise above the ashes.

Deadpool & Wolverine is showing in theaters everywhere.
