Zack Snyder's working relationship with DC and Warner Bros. can be best described with one word: "rocky". Even though he pretty much kickstarted the DC Extended Universe via 2013's Man of Steel, the "failure" of the franchise to go toe-to-toe with the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have led to WB losing confidence in the Snyder and their relationship going sour.
We've all heard stories about Snyder's true vision for the DCEU from the director himself and now, he's opening up about a canned idea of his that DC turned down. Apparently, Snyder wanted to create a comic book tie-in for Batman vs Superman which would've explored how the Joker tortured and killed Robin.
In a recent interview with SnyderCutBR, Zack revealed his original plans for a prequel comic book series involving Jason Todd and Mistah J himself. He shares: "You know, we talked about doing a… I guess… it would be… DC, they decided not to do it. But we did talk about doing possibly, I wanted to do a sort of mini-kind of comic book run on the death of Robin, right? And what happened? How Joker killed Robin and what it did to Batman and started him down this dark, darker road that ended, kind of culminated, with the arrival of Superman." Check it out here:
Snyder's future in the DCEU looks uncertain and if he is indeed on his way out. at least he was able to fulfill his promise of releasing his version of Justice League. If I had things my way, I'd love for him to stick around and finally work on the Snyder-Verse project which was planned all along.
I mean, you can never say never, really but at this point, there's no denying that Snyder's status depends on the success of his JL cut and I for one am hoping that it'll turn out great. My fingers are crossed for sure.
Meanwhile, Zack Snyder's Justice League hits HBO Max on March 18, 2021.
