Warning: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8 episode 6.
The final episode of Game of Thrones just aired last night, and while the very last chapter to HBO's phenomenal fantasy epic has left fans crying, it's also left the fanbase rather divided.
There have been multiple complaints regarding the last season of the series, and one of the most controversial moments is Daenerys Targaryen's (Emilia Clarke) sudden decision to burn down King's Landing to the ground. The Mother of Dragons has been written as a liberator and as a hero in the past seven seasons, so the fan-favorite character's swift descent into madness came as an unearned surprise. Daenerys' death in the hands of Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) was also particularly heartbreaking.
Seeing fans' grief over Daenerys, actress Emilia Clarke decides to open up about what she thinks about the finale. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress reveals that she too had a hard time accepting what Danny had become in the eighth season of Game of Thrones.
"It was a f**king struggle reading the scripts," she said, "What I was taught at drama school... I was told that your character is right. Your character makes a choice and you need to be right with that. An actor should never be afraid to look ugly. We have uglier sides to ourselves."
However, Clarke eventually accepted the fact that there was no other direction for Danny to take. A Targaryen would always believe in fire and blood.
"And after 10 years of working on this show, it's logical. Where else can she go? I tried to think what the ending will be. It's not like she's suddenly going to go, 'Okay, I'm gonna put a kettle on and put cookies in the oven and we'll just sit down and have a lovely time and pop a few kids out.' That was never going to happen. She's a Targaryen."
According to the actress, she always believed that Danaerys would die. To Clarke, the season finale was a beautiful and touching ending to the Mother of Dragons.
