On Jan. 12, Paramount+ announced its renewal of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2.
“We’re thrilled to bring even more twisted storylines to our loyal fans of Criminal Minds: Evolution with the order of another season,” chief programming officer of Paramount Streaming, Tanya Giles, said in a statement. “There are still many dark twists and turns yet to come for the BAU…”
In a few weeks, Season 1 will come to an end. Here is what we know about Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, including the likelihood of Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler returning.
Paramount+ Makes Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Official
Criminal Minds: Evolution begins two years after the final episode of the original series, Criminal Minds Season 15. Following the pandemic, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit struggles to find help and resources as it strives to track down Elias Volt (Zach Gilford), the mastermind behind a network of serial killers.
There is no release date for the new season as of this writing. However, the announcement stated that Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 will begin production in 2023.
Will We See Old Favorites in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2?
Six BAU veterans returned for Season 1 of Criminal Minds: Evolution: Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Jennifer "JJ" Jareau (A.J. Cook), and Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez).
Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Matthew Simmons (Daniel Henney) did not return. The characters went off on secret missions, according to the revival.
Many fans were also disappointed that Shemar Moore, who played Derek Morgan until Season 11 of Criminal Minds, did not return. However, with the release of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 on the cards, there is a new opportunity to bring these popular characters back.
The showrunner of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Erica Messer, left the door open for Gubler, Moore, and Henney, who are all presently engaged in separate endeavors. Nothing is off the table for the forthcoming season, according to her.

When Will Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Return?
Criminal Minds: Evolution is currently in the middle of its debut season on Paramount+. On Jan. 12, the show returned from a holiday hiatus, and three more episodes are presently awaiting release.
The BAU has a new challenge now that the serial killer network case has been closed, and Elias is under pressure to keep his double existence hidden from his family.
