Code Geass Creator Says No One Would've Made A Series Like His Masterpiece Nowadays

Many anime fans would consider Code Geass to be one of the best anime series ever created in Japan but according to the creator of the series, the current trends in anime would've made it impossible for something like Code Geass to be produced nowadays.

During an interview with Planets' Hangout Plus talk show in Japan (via ANN), Taniguchi explained how the current trends are making it difficult for a series as epic and as intense as Code Geass to exist. "I wouldn't be able to make something like Code Geass nowadays," Taniguchi said. "I get told, 'Don't put depressing elements in.' The production committee is separated from the fans, and they don't know what will or won't be a hit."

According to Taniguchi, the current anime industry seems to be more focused on slice-of-life stories and lighthearted series, which makes it harder for an anime with depressing elements like Code Geass to be approved.

The pressure to complete an anime series in a packed release schedule makes it harder for something like Code Geass to come out.

First created by Sunrise with character designs by CLAMP, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion follows Lelouch vi Britannia who tried to bring the Britannia Empire down when he acquires the power of the Geass, which allows him to exert his will over others.
