Marvel's original Annihilation events are often considered by many to be some of the company's best comic work, putting the spotlight on some minor characters and making them feel like big stars after. It's thanks to Annihilation that we have a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and that shouldn't be taken lightly; it's the truth. Now, we have a new one coming in Annihilation: Scourge and though it doesn't focus on the Guardians this time around, it does have its fair share of awesome cosmic characters.
After Annihilation - Scourge: Alpha #1 was announced in November, we now have more one-shots coming that will highlight several characters who will be involved in the event: Annihilation - Scourge: Beta Ray Bill #1, Annihilation - Scourge: Fantastic Four #1, Annihilation - Scourge: Nova #1, and Annihilation - Scourge: Silver Surfer #1. There will also be an Annihilation - Scourge: Omega #1 one-shot, which will end the event, hopefully in good quality.
The Alpha and Omega one-shots will be written by Matthew Rosenberg, who appears to be the mastermind behind this little event. During an interview with Newsarama, Rosenberg admitted that he was a fan of the original Annihilation events and is happy to put his own spin on them. Hopefully, Rosenberg doesn't treat the characters here like he did in Uncanny X-Men, which resulted in numerous fan-favorite deaths.
Given the prestige of the older Annihilation events, there are probably a lot of expectations for this event. Hopefully, it goes well and leads to a new direction for some of these characters, especially Nova, who deserves an ongoing series darn it.
All of the Annihilation: Scourge one-shots will be available in December.
