The Balrogs were described to be ancient creatures that have long been in slumber in the depths of the caves. They were first mentioned in The Rings of Power season 1 episode 5 titled Partings in 2022.

As legend has it, the Balrogs were last seen centuries ago, right after the lightning struck against the tree on top of the Misty Mountains.

As the High King suggested, the fiery creatures are believed to have "seeped down the roots into the mountain depths, where it waits." In this case, season 2 episode 5 titled Halls of Stone may have just answered the long-awaited truth.

Just when Princess Disa was growing wary of the corruption King Durin was facing because of the rings of power, it would seem that their people also had to suffer with it.

From digging the foundation of their cave in exchange for sunlight to seeking the kingdom's money for the ring, Disa knew better than to let her husband, Prince Durin, fall for it.

If it hadn't been for the ring, though, she wouldn't have discovered the dark creature lurking underneath their home for centuries.

Though the episode hasn't shown its full form yet, Tolkien's mythology stated that the Balrog would be seen hiding at the bottom of the Mithril seam in Khazad-dûm, which could pertain to Disa's findings.

The question lies not in how they survived after Morgoth's defeat, but rather what they have been waiting for all these years.
