In Sunlight, King Durin's Affinity with the Ring Sends Him Down a Darker Path
One of the biggest dilemmas King Durin IV's (played by Owain Arthur) kingdom is facing underground is their lack of sunlight. They suffer from the consequences of the surface world down in their caves.
Somehow, in The Rings of Power season 2 episode 5 titled Halls of Stone leads King Durin to speculate how the digging for sunlight mission was progressing.
Unfortunately, their efforts remain fruitless as they only made their cave walls "more unstable."
King Durin, on the other hand, touched upon the foundation wall and insisted they dig there. His son, Prince Durin IV, is against it, considering that taking it down could make it even more dangerous for their home.
However, as far as their conflict goes, King Durin is just as stubborn and in fact, digs into the foundation wall himself, only to have seemingly proven his "hunch" right.
Now that the cave has earned its sunlight, though, this sends an eerie warning to Disa...
What Disa's Warning Means in The Rings of Power Season 2
While Princess Disa had been pushing for Prince Durin to make up with his father, the King, she and her husband found themselves a new problem: the ring King Durin now possesses.
"Learning to hear the mountains is a gift that's honed and refined over a lifetime," Disa warns the Prince he should never wear the ring, a symbol of their impending doom, "This feels somehow like cheating."
Even though the Prince believes the King knows what he's doing, wielding that kind of power, according to Disa, would corrupt "even the most virtuous of Dwarves."
In this case, the fifth episode pretty much confirmed it. When the married couple decided to shop for their girl's birthday, they found that the marketplace had spiked up their prices as part of the King's new law: the Ring tribute, "For every coin spent, another goes to the crown."
Though Disa manages to haggle for it, the tuning crystal falls down to a new undiscovered place in their home.
In an attempt to retrieve it from the depths of their cave down under, she discovers something darker lurking beneath the caves, which may be the slumbering Balrog living under the Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm.
