Sure, one-dimensional villains might have been one of Marvel fans biggest complaints about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Thanos wasn't like any other baddie that anyone's seen before. Convinced that he needed to eradicate one half of the universe to maintain order and balance, the Mad Titan's motivations were clear. Not only that, but the dynamic between Thanos and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) helped humanize the character giving him depth.
But what if Thanos had lied about Gamora? In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos had to sacrifice the one thing that he loved to obtain the Soul Stone. That one thing was Gamora, his favorite daughter. But did Thanos really love Gamora?
There's a new fan theory making the rounds online saying that Thanos' "love" might have been an elaborate lie after all.
Taking note of Infinity War's cinematography and visual cues, a Marvel fan on twitter formed a pretty convincing argument saying that Thanos might not have actually loved his daughter.
"Peter and Gamora, who have both been through some INCREDIBLE personal growth over the last two Guardians of the Galaxy films, have never been able to make themselves emotionally vulnerable before this point," the theorist states. "But now, when they say, "I love you," they're both awash in orange."
Outside of orange visual cues, purple is used to indicate fear in the film, a color that's often seen when characters discuss Thanos in Infinity War. However, instead of bringing orange on Vormir, Gamora's death scene where Thanos struggles to push her down the cliff, we get to see the eclipse of a purple moon.
When Thanos realizes he has to sacrifice Gamora to obtain the Soul Stone, orange visual cues are absent from the scene. Could this mean that Thanos didn't love Gamora after all?
It's an interesting theory, one that might be explored further in Avengers: Endgame.
