The deaths of major Marvel heroes like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in Avengers: Endgame may have broken thousands and thousands of hearts, but it seems like there was supposed to be even more deaths in the movie.
Sitting down to speak in an interview with ComicBook.com during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con International last weekend, Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely decided to address the deaths in the film.
According to the writing duo, the Avengers do-or-die mission to undo Thanos (Josh Brolin) snappening could have resulted in even more heartache.
"We may have played with some others... but arc-wise and mathematically it is the perfect ending for Tony Stark. He needs to make a sacrifice - he needs to make the ultimate sacrifice when you go from selfish to that," Markus told the publication.
Of course, adding in more deaths would have shifted the focus away from the sacrifice that Tony had to make in the film. There was a whole lot of weight to Tony's passing. Not only is Iron Man often considered the leader of the Avengers, but technically, he was the very first Avenger with the success of the 2008 Iron Man movie sparking the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now, with Endgame done and gone, fans are looking at an MCU without half of the original team that comprised the Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Still, there's a lot to look forward to in Phase 4, especially with films like Thor: Love and Thunder as well as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Phase 4 is set to begin with the Black Widow standalone which is set for release on May 1, 2020.
