Avengers: Endgame Writers Potential Tease Storylines For Sam Wilson’s Captain America

Not only did Avengers: Endgame complete Iron Man's (Robert Downey Jr.) journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also gave the perfect end for Captain America (Chris Evans). Returning to the Quantum Realm to return the Infinity Stones that the Avengers had borrowed, Steve Rogers decides to stay and live his life out with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in the past. When he returns to the present, Steve Rogers is a much older version of himself who hands over his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) turning Falcon into Marvel's new Captain America.

In the commentary track that came along with the digital release of Endgame, directors Joe and Anthony Russo together with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely decide to address the debate on who should the Captain America shield have gone to in the film.

While some felt that it was just right for Sam to become the new Cap, others felt that Steve should have passed on the mantle to the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

However, it seems like the creators didn't really think of Bucky when passing on the mantle, saying that Captain America's shield was always meant for Sam.

"Sam represents everything Captain America is supposed to represent, which is the idea of what this country could be," Markus says. "And Bucky, as I've said before, in a way he represents what this country actually is, which is a murky, political situation as evidenced in Winter Soldier. But Captain America has always represented the idea behind the country."

In the commentary, McFeely also seems to hint at the potential arc for growth that Sam might have in the upcoming Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

"Well its a rich story going forward if Marvel chooses to explore it," the writer goes on explaining, "What does it mean for this man with his own identity as Falcon, to take on another one? What does it mean for an African-American man to take on the mantle of Captain America? How does he feel about that? Is he honored? Does he chafe against it? You know, there's a lot of rich stuff to explore there."

While we're not really quite sure what Marvel has planned for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we're hoping that Sam is introduced in the series as Marvel's new Captain America.

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD.
