Ever since word came out that Disney was buying out 21st Century Fox and the studio's various film and television assets, fans began expecting the arrival of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all of Fox's other mutant characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though it seemed rather unlikely, some hoped to see the mutant characters making their way into one of the most highly anticipated films of the year – Avengers: Endgame.
Now, as Endgame fast approaches its release towards the end of the month, directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirm whether or not Marvel fans are going to see the X-Men make an appearance in the upcoming second entry of the two-part Avengers movie. Marvel fans might have been hoping for familiar faces in the film, however, they might not be getting any mutant heroes in the film at all.
"It would not have been," Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo told ComicBook.com in an interview where the filmmakers were asked about the X-Men and Fantastic Four in Endgame. "That deal didn't actually officially close until a week and a half ago. It would not be logistically possible."
"We will get there," Anthony Russo tried to comfort though.
"We'll get to Secret Wars one day," Joe added.
Marvel fans really shouldn't be looking for the X-Men in Endgame. As exciting as it sounds, the Russos make a very good point – having the X-Men wouldn't really fit in the film's production schedule.
Besides, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already confirmed the matter of Marvel and the upcoming mutants. According to Feige, the X-Men and Fantastic Four won't be making their way to the MCU until five or so years from now. Marvel's taking its time with the X-Men, hoping to focus on its other endeavors before anything else.
Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
