Avengers: Endgame introduced the first openly gay character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We will get to know more in the future, and some of them we may have met already. At least this is what seems to be the case after directors Joe and Anthony Russo accidentally revealed that there is at least one established character who is gay all along.
In an interview with EW Morning Live, the duo talked about Joe Russo's cameo as a gay man who is a member of a support group led by Steve Rogers for people still reeling from the devastating loss caused by Thanos' snap.
When asked if his character was the first ever gay character introduced in the MCU, he had an interesting answer. Joe emphasized that while his character is indeed the first openly gay person we meet in the sprawling cinematic universe, he noted that there are more who happen to be characters familiar to us. "There've been insinuations about other characters' sexuality, but this is the first openly gay character," the director went on to say.
When podcast co-host Jessica Shaw asks who else is gay, he realized that he may have revealed a little too much. "Uhh, we're gonna find out," with Anthony Russo chiming in to avoid any more spoilery details. "That's a story for another day."
To move on from it, Joe Russo concluded, "There is a gay character coming up in one of their films, and I think Kevin will make that announcement, I'm sure pretty soon." This is likely connected to what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said in the past about introducing the first gay lead character in the MCU. However, Joe's statement suggests that he may have been referring to characters that we already know.
Who these characters are, we'll have to just speculate on for now. A romance between Valkyrie and Captain Marvel is something fans seem to be on board with. Even actresses Tessa Thompson and Brie Larson are up for it, so maybe we might see that pan out after all.
