Arcane Studio Co-Founder Eyes Anime Adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond

Fortiche Production’s co-founder Pascal Charrue shared insights into their new project, Penelope of Sparta, and their anime inspirations in a recent interview.

When asked about any manga they could adapt into animation, Charrue revealed that “the first adaptation that comes to mind would be Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue”.

“It’s a masterpiece with incredible depth and stunning artwork that would be fascinating to bring to life in animation,” said Charrue.

Meanwhile, Vagabond fans have high expectations for any adaptation, be it an anime or a live-action, given the manga’s revered status.

Their passion for Vagabond is immense, which contributes to the challenges of adapting Inoue’s masterpiece.

While the lack of a Vagabond anime adaptation is disappointing for some fans, Fortiche Production could be a fitting choice for a project like Vagabond given the company's previous work on the hit Arcane series.

Why Is There No Vagabond Anime to This Day? Here’s What Fans Think

Fans of Takehiko Inoue's critically acclaimed manga Vagabond have long been perplexed and let down by the lack of an anime adaptation.

Despite the manga's critical and commercial success, fans think several factors contribute to why an anime adaptation of Vagabond has not yet materialized.

The manga's intricate and detailed artwork is the first, as it gives the historical environment and characters a remarkable depth and complexity.

It would undoubtedly take significant funding and knowledge from the right people to translate this level of detail into animation, making it a challenging and intimidating undertaking for any anime studio.

Another factor might be the mature and philosophical themes that Vagabond explores, such as existentialism, personal enlightenment, and the meaning of life.

These themes could be difficult to translate into an anime that frequently relies on simpler narratives.

Meanwhile, a few fans believe it could be challenging for creators to secure Inoue's consent to adapt Vagabond. It is likely that the author is hesitant to adapt his work or that he has not yet found a studio that shares his vision for the anime.

To this day, the Vagabond fandom is deeply divided, with fans debating whether or not they would be interested in an anime adaptation of the beloved manga series.
