Team X

After Magneto's tragic death at the hands of Apocalypse, X-Men '97 Season 2, Episode 4, "The Rise of Apocalypse Part II," ends with a post-credit scene featuring Wolverine meeting Captain America and Black Widow.

The moment recreates the iconic cover of 1963's Uncanny X-Men #268, which features the same three heroes.

In the scene, Steve Rogers hands Logan a classified Weapon X file in honor of their partnership during World War II. The Avenger also warns Wolverine not to go after those responsible for the sinister program alone.

Wolverine then reveals that he won't be working solo, telling Captain America that he's "getting the old band back together."

So, which mutant team is he referring to? One popular theory points to Team X.

In the original X-Men: The Animated Series, Team X was a small group of Weapon X operatives who carried out black-ops missions after being subjected to extensive memory manipulation.

The team consisted of Wolverine, Silver Fox, Maverick, and Sabretooth, all of whom were brainwashed into serving the government.

After going their separate ways in the acclaimed '90s animated series, Logan may reunite Team X in X-Men '97 Season 2, Episode 5, "Weapon X, Lies, and DVDs," a title that appears to reference the 1995 X-Men: The Animated Series episode "Weapon X, Lies, and Videotape."

Wolverine lost his adamantium claws in the X-Men '97 Season 1 finale during a brutal battle with Magneto, who used his magnetic powers to rip the metal completely from Logan's skeleton, leaving him with only his natural bone claws.

If Wolverine does return to Weapon X, the program could provide a way for him to regain his adamantium.

The X-Men '97 Season 2 trailers have already teased the restoration of Wolverine's adamantium claws and skeleton, though it remains to be seen how that will happen.

In the comics, Logan regained his adamantium after agreeing to become one of En Sabah Nur's Horsemen.

As the animated series is putting its own spin on the story, it's possible that Wolverine's pursuit of Weapon X could ultimately lead him to Apocalypse.

For now, fans will have to wait and see how it all unfolds when X-Men '97 Season 2, Episode 5 premieres on Wednesday, July 15, on Disney+.
