The Ahsoka series was the most highly anticipated Star Wars show of 2023. But where does Ahsoka fit in the Star Wars canon?

Is The Ahsoka Series Canon?

Yes. The Ahsoka TV show is canon, as is any Star Wars show distributed via Disney+.

Ahsoka Tano first appears as a main character in the animated Clone Wars TV series.

Moreover, Ahsoka is one of the focus characters in Tales of the Jedi.

She then had a supporting role in other Star Wars shows, mainly Rebels and The Mandalorian.

With Star Wars books that came before Disney took over, things are a bit blurry, as most of them are not considered canon any longer.

Instead, they form what is considered an adjacent series of stories known as Star Wars Legends.

We can, however, rest assured that any Ahsoka-related movies and TV series on Disney+ are canon and have an impact on the main Star Wars media.

Ahsoka's tale is still unusual as far as the canon is concerned, as it seems to draw inspiration from the novel Heir to the Empire which has lost its canon status.

However, Ahsoka won't be an adaptation of the book. It will simply use part of its basic premise, the way Star Wars Rebels used the novel's villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn.

So far, Ahsoka's character is most heavily associated with the time before the Empire took over, and with the Rebellion. However, her own series takes us to a later time, after the fall of the Empire.

Like The Mandalorian, the Ahsoka TV series will unfold in the New Republic era - - a time characterized by relative freedom, though not completely free of corruption and threats from the dark side.

The Ahsoka series takes place five years after the fall of the Empire.

Therefore, it takes place after the prequel trilogy, Rogue One, Andor, and Rebels, and, of course, after the original trilogy.

It unfolds around the same time as The Mandalorian, predating the sequel trilogy.

That being said, it also touches on the past, with some Clone Wars flashbacks.

The one series you should absolutely watch before the Ahsoka TV series is Star Wars: Rebels.

Some Star Wars fans have overlooked this animated series as a bit too childish, but it shows much more depth than initially suspected.

In it, we get to know many characters who will play an important role in Ahsoka.

These include Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and, of course, Thrawn, who has been hyped as Ahsoka's main villain.

Of course, it goes without saying that the more Ahsoka-focused episodes you (re)watch from the animated Clone Wars show, the better.

Additional optional viewing includes The Mandalorian, but Ahsoka's influence on the plot is relatively minimal, so you can skip it if you want.

Tales of the Jedi is another animated show that features never-seen-before scenes from Ahsoka's early life, but, once again, watching this isn't as essential as Clone Wars or Rebels.
