Star Wars creator George Lucas has finally made his long-awaited San Diego Comic-Con debut to unveil his plans for a new narrative art museum.

While Star Wars has been a staple of Comic-Con since its earlier years, Lucas has never made an appearance in a panel to discuss and promote the franchise. Fortunately, he finally showed up at the convention last weekend, but to promote a new endeavor that will excite fans and art enthusiasts who might be curious to see what's next for him.

Lucas made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to give a preview of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is set to open in Los Angeles next year. He appeared on the panel alongside Guillermo del Toro, Star Wars production designer Doug Chiang, and Queen Latifah, who served as the moderator.

According to Deadline, Lucas described his upcoming museum as "a temple to the people’s art." It was established because he needed a place to display his 40,000 pieces of art and wanted to have a place where people could celebrate pop culture throughout the years.

"[Art] is more about a connection and emotional connection with the work, not how much it cost or what celebrity did it. I don’t think it’s anything anyone will tell you. If you have emotional connection, it’s art. If you don’t, just move onto the next painting," he said.

Chiang said that the museum "is giving respect to an art form that hasn’t been honored before," and he hopes it "inspires the next Norman Rockwell or Frank Frazetta."

Meanwhile, del Toro, who serves as one of the board members at the museum, hinted that it will house some of his personal art collection.

He said, "We realize that stories shape the world. One of the narrative branches brutally applied is propaganda. Art celebrates the work of incredible people, but also celebrates the things that belong to us: myths belong to us. Propaganda belongs to a very small group. Myth unites us and propaganda divides us."

Should Fans Expect George Lucas' Return to Lucasfilm and Star Wars?

Lucas' Comic-Con appearance is not an indication that he would be returning to the world of Star Wars anytime soon, nor would he be involved in Lucasfilm's productions again.

He is currently more focused on building the narrative art museum, and fans in Los Angeles can support him by visiting it when it opens next year.

However, while he won't be returning to Star Wars, the new museum will house some of the props and artworks from the franchise, such as General Grievous' bike, the landspeeder from the original Star Wars, and Anakin Skywalker’s spaceship from The Phantom Menace.

It will also house a gallery dedicated to concept artist Ralph McQuarrie's original artworks for the original Star Wars.
