Leaked footage from the live-action Legend of Zelda movie is now circulating online, seemingly teasing which timeline the Sony–Nintendo project will follow.
Nintendo officially announced the film adaptation of the video game series in November 2023, confirming its collaboration with Sony Pictures.
Now that production began earlier this month in New Zealand, the first footage has finally surfaced.
Which Timeline will The Legend of Zelda Movie Follow?
The leaked footage shows Bo Bragason in character as Princess Zelda meeting a performer who appears to be playing Impa, seemingly portrayed by Severance star Dichen Lachman.
Impa has been part of The Legend of Zelda franchise since the very first game, although her role has changed over the years. She is known as Princess Zelda’s protector or bodyguard, while a much younger version of her appeared in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
With that being said, there are now theories that the upcoming movie will adapt The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
To support this assumption, Bragason is seen wearing a blue tunic, tights, and a satchel in the footage, which is similar to Zelda’s look in the Breath of the Wild games.
While the official game timeline is notoriously complicated, falling under one of three branches: The Fallen Hero, The Child, and The Adult, Breath of the Wild takes place far into the future.
In fact, it’s unclear how it connects to earlier titles, as it differs significantly from most entries in the series.
Since the game grants players the freedom to shape their story and complete quests in any order, it may also afford director Wes Ball the creative freedom to craft the film’s narrative while honoring the franchise.
What is The Legend of Zelda Movie About?

So far, details about The Legend of Zelda movie’s plot remain scarce, but it will feature the main characters, Zelda and Link, as they confront an emerging evil.
According to a synopsis from the Film and Television Industry Alliance, the film will follow Link as he protects Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a warlord seeking the Triforce, an ancient relic that grants limitless power.
To stop Ganon, Link must embark on a perilous journey that will involve battling monsters, exploring dungeons, and solving puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that will aid him in his quest.
In addition to Bragason, 16-year-old The Haunting of Bly Manor star Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link in The Legend of Zelda.
The film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027. According to creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the release date was moved to “make the film as good as it can be.”
