There was a lot of controversy over Justice League. Director Zack Snyder left the production just as it was about to enter the reshoot period so that he could mourn the loss of his daughter, and Warner Brothers brought in Joss Whedon to take his place. The film tanked commercially and critically, with many fans complaining about the film's misplaced levity and the blatant misogyny.
Knowing that Warner Brothers had meddled with Snyder's work, fans started petitioning for the director's original cut before Whedon came in and replaced most of the footage with his reshoots. Now, the filmmaker himself admits that his original script for Justice League had been scrapped even before it was made.
Snyder just recently spoke with fans during a question and answer segment at his Director's cut event following a screening of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Cut, and thanks to Screen Rant's Stephen Colbert, we get to learn about the truth behind Justice League.
"When this movie came out, understand that Chris Terrio and I had finished the script to Justice League before BvS came out. Some people didn't like the movie. A vocal minority. So they said 'there's a lot of stuff we don't want you to do' so we did a rewrite from that script," Snyder told fans at the event, "So the original Justice League script, we didn't even shoot. The really scary version. Because we were really nervous after the response."
As it turns out, not only was Snyder's project overhauled by Whedon, but it was also entirely changed by Warner Brothers. Well, goes to show that meddling never gets studios anywhere really.
DC's next film, Shazam! is set for release April 5, 2019.
