Another beloved character bites the dust in Yellowstone season 5 as a fan-favorite dies in the recently aired episode 12 to the shock of many fans.
Since the second half of the show's final season started, two main characters have met their demise which sets up the high-stakes drama of the last episodes of the hit series. Now, another has been added to the growing list of the final season's death.
Who Dies in Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 12?
To the surprise of many fans, Colby Mayfield met his demise in the recently aired episode 12 of Yellowstone season 5.
The character unexpectedly dies while trying to save Carter, who finds himself cornered in a stall by a horse. While Carter survived, Colby was kicked to death while rescuing.
Colby's passing was due to an act of sacrifice and his action was seen by viewers as courageous, which is a trait that the character has always shown throughout his appearance in the series.
Ryan and Teeter, his close friends, mourned the character's death. It is also a true shock to the viewers as they didn't expect him to bite the dust so shockingly.
Despite all of that, it just shows how high-stakes the series is and how creator/writer Taylor Sheridan is willing to kill off characters even those you might not expect to happen to despite not being part of the story's intense storyline.
The Aftermath of Colby's Death
In the aftermath of Colby's death, Carter felt guilty as he believed he was the one to blame for the character's unexpected demise.
Beth comforted Carter and assured him that he was not the reason why Colby died and he should stop blaming himself for the unfortunate accident.
"Colby had a whole life to live in front of him. He had a love in his life; they were making plans. There was a future ahead of them. So it has a very different impact, I think, then the murder of John Dutton, because it happened because he was doing what he’s meant to be doing," director Christina Voros explained Colby's death in a recent interview.
"It didn’t happen because someone was out to get him or because he did anything wrong. He was trying to protect Carter and did what he thought was the right thing, and it was a freak accident. So it’s interesting to see all those characters struggle with the notion of blame, and Beth speaks to it very wisely."
Voros added, "With John Dutton, Kayce, and Beth wish they did things differently or saw things coming. But the struggle with the blame that is felt by Colby’s fellow cowboys blaming themselves — “If I had been there” or “If I had gone instead of him” — is a very human experience."
