X-Men: Dark Phoenix has officially been declared as the biggest box office bomb of 2019, with many people seeing it as a poor way to end the Fox/X-Men saga. It was seen as a rushed and fairly uninspired superhero movie that was muddled by reshoots, poor trailers, and spoilers that came from people who made the movie. However, director and writer Simon Kinberg has revealed that he originally planned for the film to be a two-parter.
During a lengthy interview with IGN, Kinberg discussed how some things just don't turn out the way you want them to when making a movie. Not revealing anything too juicy or incriminating, Kinberg said that he wanted Dark Phoenix to be a two-part movie but couldn't due to the powers that be. It's a real shame since this had the potential to be a solid movie after the ending of X-Men: Apocalypse.
"On every movie there are things you thought were great and perfect, and then you watch them and didn't think they were as strong as you imagined and you go a different way. Dark Phoenix was a hard movie because, in its initial concept when I wrote it, it was meant to be a two-part film. And then it suddenly became a one-part movie for reasons that weren't of my doing. Having to create around that massive change was a challenge in itself. All these movies are uniquely challenging."
Kinberg was also asked about a potential "Kinberg Cut" of Dark Phoenix since that's the current trend but feels that there would be too much work to make that film happen. Still, Kinberg does feel that the final product was his vision for the movie; he just wishes things would have gone a bit better.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is now available on digital media.
