Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons among tabletop products, had its biggest quarter ever, according to its parent company Hasbro, which had its quarterly earnings reports today. According to Hasbro, Magic: The Gathering and higher prices pushed its overall profit above eestimates, noting that the company's tabletop revenue was up 15% compared to the same period in 2021, largely thanks to the popular trading card game founded by Richard Garfield.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said that every major Magic: The Gathering set had over $100 million in sales this year. During the Q&A section of the media call, Cocks revealed that Magic: The Gathering was between 70% to 80% of Wizards of the Coast's overall business. with about 75% of MTG sales coming in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
However, Dungeons & Dragons had a down quarter compared to the same period last year. This isn't due to a decline in tabletop game sales, but rather due to D&D: Dark Alliance coming out during Q2 2021. During the sales call, Hasbro mentioned its purchase of D&D Beyond, noting that it helped accelerate "direct-to-fans capability" for D&D. Since acquiring D&D Beyond, Wizards has used the website to release free packets of rules, including a new statblock for the legendary archlich Vecna and free adventures designed to prepare players for its upcoming Spelljammer expansion.
During today's earnings call, Hasbro announced that Magic: The Gathering Arena, the digital version of the tabletop game, will be heading to consoles sometime next year. MTG Arena continues to be a major driver of revenue for Wizards' digital segment and has helped grow the card game.
