Virgin River has become Netflix's longest-running original scripted series with its upcoming eighth season, leading some fans to wonder whether the show is finally nearing its end after surpassing Grace and Frankie's 94 episodes across seven seasons.

Premiering in 2019, the sleeper hit has already seen several major cast departures, including Grayson Gurnsey and Mark Ghanime throughout its seven-season run. So, will Virgin River continue beyond Season 8?

Ahead of the seventh season's release, Virgin River was already renewed for Season 8, which is now in production, further cementing its status as Netflix's longest-running original scripted series.

However, as the latest seasons have divided fans and critics alike, and a cast shake-up unsettled some of its most loyal viewers, questions about the show's future have begun to surface.

To ease those concerns, Netflix's Head of UCAN Scripted Series, Jinny Howe, reaffirmed the streamer's commitment to both the series and its fans, promising they would not be let down, though she stopped short of confirming another renewal.

"All I'm going to say is the fans of this show are going to continue to get what they want as long as they want, and we are being very thoughtful about how to make sure we are both serving but protecting the fandom," Howe told Deadline.

While Howe neither confirmed nor ruled out a ninth season, she also gave no indication that the series is coming to an end.

For now, Virgin River remains one of Netflix's most successful shows, consistently maintaining strong viewership and securing a spot in the streamer's Top 10, thanks to the loyal fanbase it has built over the years.

After tying the knot with Jack (Martin Henderson), Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) can finally say the words, "I'm his mother," after welcoming their son, who was born with a heart condition and requires specialized medical care.

Virgin River Season 8 will focus on the couple navigating parenthood, though with added challenges after Mel transports their newborn to the NICU in an ambulance during the Season 7 finale.

"I am excited to see Mel as a mother," Breckenridge told Tudum after waiting for this storyline to finally happen for her character. "I think we've anticipated that moment for far too long. It should be sweet. I'm sure it'll be harder than she thinks it's going to be."

Showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, meanwhile, teased that the new episodes will explore the strain of raising a child with special medical needs and the toll it takes on the couple's marriage as they navigate parenthood in "such a high-stakes situation." The challenge is further complicated by the fact that their son will be under the care of Eli (Austin Nichols), one of the world's leading cardiothoracic surgeons and Mel's ex.

Despite that, Breckenridge hopes everything Jack and Mel go through during this new chapter of parenthood won't overwhelm them as a couple.

"I'm hoping that at some point they get to some kind of normalcy," she continued. "I'd love for Mel to be doing some gardening and cooking."
