According to an exclusive report from Variety, Netflix has begun early development on a live-action series based on the multi-million-selling Persona franchise. While Netflix officially declined to comment on the leak, the project has already gathered its heavy-hitting creative talent attached behind the scenes!

Christopher Monfette, who is best known for his writing and production work on Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and 9-1-1, is reportedly attached to write the pilot. He will also be serving as the series's executive producer and showrunner.

The adaptation is also drawing major muscle from established production companies like Shawn Levy's 21 Laps (Stranger Things), which is co-producing alongside Story Kitchen, a media company that carved out a massive reputation for successful gaming adaptations such as SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog movies. SEGA's own Toru Nakahara is also attached as an executive producer to make sure the brand's identity stays intact.

Because the project is still in its early development, little is known about Netflix's casting choices or a projected release window.

How Can Netflix Choose to Showcase Persona's Original Lore?

Persona has proven to be a wildly popular RPG franchise, and while the plot varies game to game, the franchise typically follows Japanese high school students who must go through normal daily routines and build and maintain friendships in the middle of dealing with supernatural threats.

Developed by P-Studios (a division of Atlus) and published by Sega, there have been six main entries in the Persona franchise to date. The seventh entry, Persona 6, was announced in June 2026 during the latest Xbox Games Showcase. There are also 15 related spinoffs in the franchise, all of which stemmed as a spinoff of the Japanese game series Shin Megami Tensei, with Revelations: Persona debuting in 1996.

Now, considering the huge roster of choices, the streaming giant should have no problem defining where to start in the live-action TV adaptation. After all, this isn't their first rodeo.
