There’s only one episode left of IT: Welcome to Derry, and fans are eager to know if Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) will return for a second season to terrorize the town again.
The show expands the world of IT as a prequel to Andy Muschietti's horror films, which are adapted from Stephen King’s novel, exploring Pennywise’s origins and how the town’s nightmare first begins to take shape.
With rave reviews and impressive viewership numbers, the big question now is: Will there be an IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2?
Is IT: Welcome to Derry Renewed for Season 2?

So far, HBO has yet to officially renew IT: Welcome to Derry for Season 2. However, there’s a strong chance that the show will return.
In fact, executive producer Andy Muschietti revealed that the plan is to produce three seasons, each set in a different era and told in reverse order.
“We are basing the three seasons of this series on each of these catastrophic events," he said on Radio TU (via Bloody Disgusting). “There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908.”
The series adapts the interlude chapters of King’s original novel, each of which details a major and often devastating event in Derry.
"The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research," he continued. "They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff."
So, every time Pennywise comes out, expect a catastrophic event to unfold at the beginning of a new cycle.
What Will IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Be About?

The planned IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 would be set in 1935, meaning it would delve further into the past to explore more of Derry’s complicated history.
In King’s book, several tragic events in the town are detailed, including the Black Spot fire, the massacre of a gang of bank robbers, and an explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks that killed several children.
According to Muschietti, these tragic events will also be explored in the series when it gets renewed for future seasons.
In addition, after showing Pennywise’s origins, revealing him as Bob Gray, a dancing clown in 1908 who was mourning the death of his wife and raising his daughter, Ingrid, when It came to him, the show also featured an older Ingrid in 1935, when she first encounters It while working at Juniper Hill Asylum.
With that being said, Season 2 is expected to expand on these moments and the time periods in which they occur.
Will IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Feature the Same Cast?

Given that IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 will go back in time to 1935, many of the first season’s cast may not return.
Most of its main characters, such as Richie (Arian S. Cartaya), Ronnie (Amanda Christine), Lily (Clara Stack), Marge (Matilda Lawler), and Will (Blake Cameron James), weren’t even born yet at the time, so they might not appear in Season 2 if it gets green-lit.
Leroy (Jovan Adepo) and Charlotte (Taylour Paige) also only just moved to Derry during the first season’s pilot, so they, too, may not be seen.
However, fans could possibly see a younger version of Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider), alongside a young Ingrid Kersh (Madeleine Stowe) and Rose (Kimberly Guerrero), considering they have been living in Derry since 1935.
Anyhow, whatever era is depicted, expect Skarsgård to return to reprise his role as Pennywise.
So, by the looks of it, it’s only a matter of time before IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 is officially announced.
The final episode of the first season will be released on Sunday, December 14, on HBO.
