Following the casting report, James Gunn shared a photo with Matthew Lillard, who couldn’t hide the smile on his face.

“Just casually hanging out with my longtime friend @matthewlillard for no reason,” the DC Studios co-CEO captioned the snap, seemingly playing innocent amid the Man of Tomorrow casting rumors.

While the photo appeared to have been taken in an office, some fans speculated that it may have come from the Superman sequel’s set.

For starters, this wouldn’t be the first time Lillard and Gunn have worked together. The two previously collaborated on Gunn’s live-action Scooby-Doo movies, with Lillard portraying the iconic Shaggy Rogers alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake and Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley.

So, with ongoing speculation that Gunn may reunite with actors he has worked with before, it’s possible that Lillard could indeed appear in Man of Tomorrow.

So far, it remains to be seen what Matthew Lillard’s role will be in Man of Tomorrow, or even if he will appear in the film at all.

However, if he does show up, he is most likely to play a new DC character, as James Gunn often casts familiar actors in completely new roles rather than recasting established ones.

It is also possible that he could portray a supporting character in a grounded storyline, such as a government agent, scientist, journalist, or civic figure tied to Superman’s world.

Alternatively, like in Daredevil: Born Again, Lillard could appear as a surprise villain or a morally complex character in Man of Tomorrow

Gunn is known for incorporating unexpected twists in his films, so a darker role would not be out of the question.

If none of these apply, Lillard may instead appear in a small but memorable cameo role.

During an appearance at Los Angeles Comic-Con 2025, Lillard already expressed interest in joining Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” slate.

“I have wanted to be in the superhero world. I've wanted to be in, you know, these. I mean, if anyone's curious, if you run into James Gunn, tell him I'm available,” he said (via ScreenRant). “James Gunn wrote Scooby-Doo 1 and 2. He's one of my dear friends. I keep waiting for that invitation. I don't know if it's lost in the mail, but yeah, I like that.”

By the looks of it, his request may have finally been answered.
