Linda Hamilton speaks out about James Cameron’s new Terminator movie, and she doesn’t seem particularly interested in it.

In 2024, the iconic filmmaker teased a new Terminator project, which was later confirmed to be in active development and often referred to as Terminator 7.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed not to be returning as T-800, following the conclusion of his character’s story in Terminator: Dark Fate, will Hamilton be part of the new movie?

As an original character alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton is one of the two central pillars of the Terminator franchise.

First appearing as Sarah Connor in the acclaimed 1984 original movie The Terminator, she plays the primary human protagonist who later becomes the mother of John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance.

She then starred in another hit Terminator film, 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, transforming from a simple waitress into a heavily trained, muscular warrior. After almost three decades, she returned in the 2019 follow-up Terminator: Dark Fate.

So, given the importance of her character, will Hamilton be in Terminator 7?

“I’m out,” she said (via JustWatch). “You know, the last one didn’t perform well financially.”

Despite the return of Hamilton and Schwarzenegger, Dark Fate received mixed critical reviews and grossed only $261 million against a production budget of $185–196 million.

It wasn’t just labeled a box-office bomb after its disappointing opening weekend; it also finished as the second-biggest bomb of 2019. That said, the film was rumored to mark the end of the franchise.

“So, I’m very surprised to hear there’s going to be another one,” Hamilton continued. “Thanks for the news. I wish everyone well; it’s just, we’ll see what happens next.”

With Hamilton seemingly hesitant about another sequel, the new Terminator movie may have to move forward without another one of its most iconic stars.

Terminator: Dark Fate

With Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger not appearing in Terminator 7, and the character of John Connor also expected to be absent, James Cameron believes their stories have run their course.

That said, it is time for the franchise to move on and explore a different side of the story for a new generation.

According to the filmmaker, science fiction has already caught up with reality, making it increasingly challenging to imagine what the future holds.

With technology advancing rapidly, telling a Terminator story that feels significantly different from what is happening today has become more difficult.

“It’s difficult, I have to tell you,” he told io9. “Science fiction has caught up and is actually overwhelming us at this point. We’re living in a science fiction world, and we’re literally having to deal with problems that in the past only existed in science fiction books and movies. Now we’re living it for real.”

Since it is difficult to predict where technology will go next and what threats humanity might face, Cameron has found it challenging to envision what lies ahead.

“I’ll never be as prescient as I was back in 1984 of imagining this one because I don’t think anybody knows what’s going to be happening a year or two years from now,” he continued. “But I at least want to future-proof myself by being a couple years out.”

Cameron appears determined to explore ideas audiences have yet to imagine, suggesting that the next Terminator movie will go beyond the familiar themes of time war and superintelligence while introducing a new generation of characters.
