James Cameron recently shared that he is currently working on a new Terminator movie. However, it looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger will not return to reprise his iconic role.
For years, fans have been waiting for news on the future of the Terminator franchise. While Dark Fate ended up being a box office disappointment when it was released in 2019, there is still hope that another installment is in the works, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence today that is eerily familiar to the original movie.
Is a New Terminator Movie Currently in the Works?

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron confirmed that he is currently "working" on a new Terminator movie.
However, he shot down the possibility of Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising the role of T-800, since he wanted to explore a new idea and a new set of characters.
"I can safely say he won’t be [in it]. It’s time for a new generation of characters. I insisted Arnold had to be involved in [2019’s] Terminator: Dark Fate, and it was a great finish to him playing the T-800," the director said.
"There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator and the idea of a time war and super intelligence. I want to do new stuff that people aren’t imagining."
Cameron also noted that fan-friendly callbacks are "what I’m not going to do" when the Alien: Earth TV series was brought up by the interviewer.
"[The show is] great; a lot of fun. I’m not criticizing it, but I was there for Aliens, what, 41 years ago? Something like that wouldn’t be of interest to me," he said. "The things that scare you the most are exactly the things you should be doing. Nobody should be operating artistically from a comfort zone."
For now, Cameron is busy promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is releasing in theaters this week, and is working on the next two movies of the franchise, which have partially started production.
What Are James Cameron's Upcoming Projects?
Aside from the next two Avatar movies and the new Terminator installment, Cameron is also working on other projects that are outside his well-known franchises.
He is co-directing Billie Eilish’s upcoming 3D concert documentary, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which is set to release in March 2026 and features groundbreaking technology in the concert movie genre.
He is also working on a film adaptation of the book Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino, which chronicles the true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who in 1945 survived the nuclear blasts at both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"The postapocalypse is not going to be the fun that it is in science fiction. It’s not going to have mutants and monsters and all sorts of cool stuff. It’s hell," he teased.
