  • Quick Answer: Tom Holland turned down hosting SNL because his heavy dyslexia creates a terrifying mental block when reading constantly changing cue cards out loud on live television.

Tom Holland recently admitted the real reason why he has never hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live despite being invited in the past.

The Spider-Man star has already gained a lot of achievements in his career so far, whether it's playing a popular superhero in a major franchise, starring in a Christopher Nolan movie, or working in various genres with different filmmakers. However, to this day, he has never hosted Saturday Night Live, unlike most movie stars.

Now, the actor has finally revealed why he has turned down the opportunity in the past.

In a recent interview on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast (via EW), Holland explained to the former Saturday Night Live cast member why he has never hosted an episode of the series.

He cited his dyslexia and the use of cue cards in the show as the reason why he turned down the invitations in the past.

"I'm heavily dyslexic. Which is one of the reasons why — and I'd love to talk to you today about it, actually — is why I've never done SNL," the Spider-Man actor said. "I'm just so petrified at the concept of, like, trying to read something and they change [it]."

Holland clarified that the reading is not the problem; rather, the struggle is that he has to do it out loud in a live broadcast.

"I can read fine. But when I have to read out loud, it just becomes… it's like a mental block. And I can freeze," he admitted.

The Spider-Man actor clarified that he is a fan of the show, but the last-minute adjustments on cue cards give him concerns about how he would perform as a host.

"I've been really lucky that they've asked me a few times to do it," Holland said. "And the truth is that I'm actually just really scared at the prospect of…I love the show, and I love the idea of having fun and making a fool of yourself in such a fun, creative way. It's just that thing of the cue cards."

Poehler quipped in response, "You have to remember, there have been people who have hosted that have been fully on drugs. So I think you can do it."

For now, fans can anticipate Holland's return as Spider-Man in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he will return as the web-slinger.

What to Expect in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will mark an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves.

Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he's devoted himself entirely to protecting his city, a full-time Spider-Man, but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.

The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo, and Liza Colon-Zayas.

The film is set to release in theaters on July 31. It will also be available on IMAX in select international markets.
