James Gunn recently explained why Superman was released on digital platforms earlier than we anticipated.
The DCU film is now available on digital platforms starting today, a little more than a month after its release in theaters. Some fans were dismayed by the news, as they believe that the film should have gotten a longer theatrical release, and it was too early for it to arrive on digital platforms, given that it is still performing well in theaters.
Why Superman is Arriving in Digital Platforms Earlier Than Expected?
Speaking with Screen Rant, Gunn explained why Superman was released on digital platforms early, instead of giving it a longer theatrical window.
He noted that he is also in favor of giving the film an extended lifespan in its theatrical release, but the upcoming premiere of Peacemaker season 2 led to the decision to have it arrive early on digital.
"Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month," the director said.
"There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it."
However, while the film can now be purchased or rented on VOD digital platforms, there is no release date set yet for its eventual arrival on HBO Max.
What is Superman's Connection to Peacemaker Season 2?
Aside from being part of the same universe, Superman and Peacemaker season 2 will have a lot of connections since some of the characters who showed up in the film are also set to appear in the series.
"It should be noted that this [show] is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show, and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker; it’s incredibly important," Gunn teased.
"Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are going to show up that we’ve already met in Superman."
So far, the confirmed Superman cast members who are expected to appear in Peacemaker season 2 as Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord).
