Why Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Brought Back the Second Death Star

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be the final movie of this trilogy but the film will be bringing back a lot of classic elements from previous installments, including Palpatine and Return of The Jedi's second Death Star. Fans were quite shocked to see this iconic landmark return for the supposed finale to the Skywalker Saga, though J.J. Abrams in the director's chair probably meant that we should have seen it coming.

When asked about the second Death Star and its return in The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams told Entertainment Weekly that it would feel symbolic of the overall story he's telling. Considering how learning from the past has been a constant theme for the current trilogy, especially in The Last Jedi, Abrams does have a point. Personally, I think he just wanted a Return of the Jedi reference but that's just me.

Whatever the case, it's clear that the second Death Star will make for an atmospheric setting for our lead characters and should be home to some exciting set-pieces. Granted, nothing looks as nuts as that army of ships from the trailer but we'll wait for the movie and see what happens.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be coming out on December 20.
