Prime Video’s planned TV adaptation of the PlayStation 4 game God of War has yet to materialize, but it’s already stirring backlash this year.
Back in 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan confirmed that a live-action series of the same name was in development for the streamer.
However, as the series is reportedly set to adapt the Norse era—beginning with the events of the 2018 installment—it looks like fans have a lot to say about it.
What is the Controversy Surrounding Prime Video’s God of War?

During an appearance on San Diego Comic-Con 2025, executive producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore revealed that while Kratos will lead God of War, his son Atreus will also play a major role, confirming that the series will focus on the ex-Spartan warrior’s time in Norse mythology.
For starters, the 2018 game begins with the two characters together, preparing a funeral pyre for Kratos’ wife, Laufey (aka Faye).
Given the game’s critical and commercial success—not only being highly acclaimed but also earning an impressive Metacritic score of 94%—it’s no surprise that Amazon Prime wanted to adapt this storyline.
However, with a major storyline preceding it, the show will largely skip a significant portion of Kratos’ earlier story.
The earlier games, released between 2005 and 2015, featured Kratos’ original story and his war against the Greek mythology gods.
Jumping straight to the Norse era means the series will not explore his dark past from the Greek saga.
As a result, fans unfamiliar with his story—especially non-gamers—may find it difficult to fully understand the protagonist’s journey.
While it’s understandable that Norse mythology may be more suitable for adaptation to the small screen, it might have been better to begin at the very beginning, allowing viewers to grasp the dark history Kratos is coming from.
What is the Status of Amazon Prime’s God of War?

After a major shakeup in October 2024, Moore revealed that they are now writing the scripts for God of War alongside creative director Cory Barlog.
“We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into,” he told Collider. “I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.”
He also praised Barlog for his ability to build the action-adventure’s world.
“Cory Barlog is a genius. That’s not a word I throw around very much, but I’ve had several meetings with Cory, and you ask Cory, ‘Well, tell me about the backstory of this or how this works,’ and he can just talk because he holds it all in his head,” Moore continued.
In a separate interview with IGN, Moore said the series would closely follow the tone and storytelling of the 2018 game and its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
He emphasized that it would reflect the emotional core of God of War, calling it an “epic journey” centered on Kratos and Atreus’ relationship.
“This is a heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this journey to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother,” he added. “So it has this emotional heart, but there’s also a sense of history of who Kratos is, a mystery about his past, what he represents, and the emotions he’s going through.”
God of War is slated to begin production in 2026.
