The DCU's most iconic superdog sidekick returns to Supergirl once it hits theaters in June 2026, but his role will take on a bigger meaning than how he and Superman worked together.
According to James Gunn, Kypto's role goes beyond being the superdog on the case.
Why Krypto's Dynamic with Superman and Supergirl Matters

On December 7, Supergirl star Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie attended the Comic Con Experience 2025 for DC Studios' Global Virtual Teaser Trailer Launch; the panel was moderated by Gunn.
After the trailer was unleashed, Gunn addressed a question about whether Krypto would finally be a "good dog" in Supergirl, following his "bad" behavior with Superman.
The Guardians of the Galaxy helmer had the perfect summary of the superdog's dynamic with the duo: "He's not a good dog, he's a terrible dog. He continues to be a terrible dog. The difference is Kara loves him, whereas he gets on Clark's nerves."
As Gunn said, Krypto being a terrible dog didn't depend on whether he was staying over at Kal-El or at Kara Zor-El. It actually depended on how both heroes had their own way of handling Krypto's antics.
In Supergirl's case, the "terrible" quality of Krypto is embraced and encouraged because she accepts him as the energetic pup she raised to be, even if Clark didn't get the hype around saving the world with a seemingly untrained superdog.
Supergirl Unravels a Different Side of DCU and Krypto

Supergirl had always seen Krypto in a different light. When Clark would call the superdog a "bad dog" for wrecking his stuff and for making a mess in his own home, Kara had a more loving, budding relationship, even as the superdog would thrash her around like a ball.
To Kara, she would never want to change him and sees Krypto as the only family that mutually loves her and would always be there for her, no matter what. Seeing as Clark has his own Kent family, Krypto is all Kara has.
As seen in the Supergirl trailer, at one point, Krypto gets severely injured, making Kara worry about him for once. We'll likely be seeing a more vulnerable side to both the hero and the sidekick dog once it releases next year.
In the meantime, fans can wait for Supergirl to premiere on the big screens on June 26, 2026.
