Horror Queen Mia Goth didn't know that she would be pulling off a double duty in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein adaptation. Neither did the fans and first-time viewers!
Considering that Elizabeth was visually distinct from the always-veiled mother of Victor, Claire, viewers would have had to squint and look much closer to realize that both characters are played by the same actress.
"They gave her eyebrows and she looked unrecognizable," one fan wrote on X, with another chiming in to say, "Is that the same person?"
Another added, "I literally knew that they were played by the same actress, before going to see the movie. And then while watching it, I was like, 'Huh. Must've been fake news.'"
The Pearl star was initially set to play the film's pure-hearted Elizabeth, also known as the woman Victor's younger brother is engaged to.
However, it would seem that after the first filming and costume fitting, the decision to have Goth play these two particular characters would greatly enhance the symbolism and parallelism that Frankenstein is trying to convey.

It is no secret that Victor Frankenstein's obsession with creating life began the moment he lost his mother, the first misfortune of his life, which led him to his experimentation in creating another.
That, and the fact that a small yet pivotal conversation with the director del Toro led to the decision.
Goth recalled that she had told the helmer she had recently become a mother, which prompted him to one of the greatest ideas to elevate his version of the Shelley classic.
"In that moment, I saw Guillermo's eyes light up. He said to me that he hadn't completely figured out who Elizabeth would be. I wonder if, in that moment, he started to put Elizabeth and Claire together for the first time," Goth said (via Netflix Tudum), adding that, "As much as Claire is Victor's mother, I also think there's an incredibly maternal side to Elizabeth."
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time Goth has had to juggle her work. If anything, this just proves her versatility in her craft.
In X, Goth took on her first dual role, playing both the elderly, murderous Pearl and the young final girl, Maxine. Meanwhile, Frankenstein disturbingly highlighted the link between Victor's attraction to Elizabeth and his desire to resurrect his mother.
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is available to stream on Netflix.
