As NCIS: Origins kickstarts its first episode by rediscovering what pushed the legendary agent forward to how we know him today, it leads fans back to the main question: who murdered Gibbs' wife and daughter in NCIS: Origins?

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for the NCIS franchise, so proceed with caution.

Who Murdered Gibbs' Wife and Daughter in NCIS: Origins? How His Story Unfolded

Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) wouldn't have been the legendary agent in Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) as we know him today if it weren't for his origin story: how he lost his wife, Shannon Fielding Gibbs (Aviva Baumann) and daughter, Kelly Gibbs (Mary Mouser).

As the NCIS: Origins trailer reminds fans, Gibbs' tragic past forces him to find out what actually happened behind losing his only known family right under his nose.

Since the title pretty much implies what Origins is focused on, the real culprit was unveiled in the main NCIS flagship series, specifically in season 3 episode 24 titled Hiatus Part II.

As it turns out, Gibbs' wife and daughter were killed by a Mexican drug dealer named Pedro Hernandez. It was no mere accident, unfortunately. If anything, his wife has been in danger ever since she became a witness to Hernandez's crime.

In this case, Gibbs' wife witnessed Hernandez kill one of the marines and testified against him. Sure, she and her daughter were granted protection for a while.

But considering that Gibbs was overseas doing his duty as an active member of the Marine Corps, they get killed behind his back.

On one night of driving, the agent assigned to be their bodyguard gets shot, leaving Shannon and their daughter, Kelly, killed during the car accident.

At the time, Shannon passed away at 35 years old, along with their 8-year-old daughter.

From then on, it was a journey to hell as Gibbs swore that he would avenge their deaths to whoever the culprit was. NCIS: Origins will likely show far more than mere flashbacks of how much he loved and cared for his family.
