What could Netflix's Lonely Planet title actually mean? Granted, it's a self-searching journey between a woman trying to write her novel and a young man who's quite unsure of his life choices. But what else is there?

Perhaps Lonely Planet is based on a true story. Here's what director Susannah Grant had to say.

Figuring Out What the 'Lonely Planet' Title Means

Starring the likes of Marriage Story's Laura Dern and The Witcher's Liam Hemsworth, Lonely Planet follows the story of these two unlikely travelers who happened to have met each other during a retreat in Morocco.

Pretty much as what romantic drama flicks usually suggest, Lonely Planet here pertains to what drove these people on the trip in the first place.

While the reclusive novelist Katherine (Laura Dern) hopes to finish penning down the pages of her book, Owen (Hemsworth) is navigating his seemingly lonesome relationship with his girlfriend.

As 'realistic' as it may sound to some, Lonely Planet is not based on a true story or a book.

In the words of Lonely Planet director Susannah Grant herself, "I wanted to make a film about the transformational power of travel — how sometimes journeying thousands of miles away from everything you know about your life can make you see it, and yourself, in a revealing new light."

Grant adds that even though neither is "looking for a new friend", they find "unexpected challenges" in this "unfamiliar culture" that strands as a "testament to the power of letting go of the familiar."

Dern herself takes the form of Katherine in her shoes and shares that Lonely Planet is an "exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships."

What makes the Netflix romance even more unique is that the journey of self-discovery comes from the dynamic between a younger man and an older established writer.

"It's not just about romance — it’s about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable," Dern said.
