Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally arrived in theaters after years of anticipation from fans. However, not all characters managed to survive the events. Who died by the end of the film?
The third film expands the world of Pandora with the introduction of a new Na'vi tribe, while also continuing the adventure of Jake and Neytiri's family in the aftermath of Neteyam's death. Just like the previous installments, it featured a major climactic battle between the Na'vi and the Sky People, and not everyone made it out alive.
SPOILER WARNING: This article includes spoilers for the ending of Avatar: Fire and Ash, so proceed with caution.
Who Dies in Avatar: Fire and Ash?
Three major characters met their demise by the end of Avatar: Fire and Ash in the third act due to various circumstances.
Kate Winslet's character, Ronal, is the most prominent character who dies in the film. She was injured following the climactic battle and died after giving birth to a baby girl, which Neytiri took care of.
General Frances Ardmore, who was introduced in The Way of Water and played by Emmy-winning actress Edie Falco, also died during the third act battle due to an explosion on the ship.
Another character, Captain Mick Scoresby, met his demise in the third act battle after he was killed by a Tulkun. He notably almost died in the previous film after he was thrown into the ocean and somehow managed to survive.
In an interview with EW, James Cameron explained why he decided to kill off some of the prominent characters and his ethos on the creative decision.
"The fact that we killed off a major character in the last film gives the audience permission to believe that we might do it again — and that's critical. You have to believe that there are real stakes," he said.
"This is like the Game of Thrones formula, right? They're like, 'I like this character. This character's really interesting... Oh, crap! No, you didn't!' Yes, we did. It's a little bit of a contract with the audience that we're going to keep you off balance a little bit."
The director added, "When all things are possible, then you've gotta pay attention. And if you're invested, you're gonna feel something no matter what the outcome, good or bad. Isn't that the fun of telling a story?"
