What’s Next for Outer Banks After Season 5 Finale?

Outer Banks has finally come to an end after five seasons, but it may not be the last time fans see the fictional Kildare Island.
Series creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke will bring viewers back to the coast of North Carolina as they explore the island’s deep social divide in a prequel series set 20 years before the events of the original show.
Tentatively titled Kildare, the trio has been working on the concept for a couple of years, having mentioned it as early as 2023 in interviews. However, while the idea has been in development for some time, it only recently came together and formally entered development at Netflix. Pate told Deadline:
- “We’re working on the script. We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
He went on to tease that the prequel would explore how the island became divided between the wealthy residents of Figure 8, known as the Kooks, and the working-class locals of The Cut, known as the Pogues. He even likened the divide to the situation in the US today, adding:
- “How it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started. How did this rift start?”
Since the prequel is set two decades before Outer Banks, fans will also get to meet younger versions of the parents of their favorite characters.
With the original series now over, Kildare could give fans a fresh look at the history behind the island and the divide that shaped the Pogues and Kooks.
