Is Obsession "Really Tragic"?
While Obsession delivers plenty of graphic, unsettling imagery, writer and director Curry Barker insists that the true horror of the movie lies in its emotional and psychological core. More specifically, in dabbling with the "be careful what you wish for" trope and in having a woman lose herself to a man's possessive fantasies.
Barker explained to DiscussingFilm that they wanted Obsession to "feel grounded" without focusing on the logic behind the magic wish, "And now, what you're left with is a pretty tragic story about a man and a woman, leaning into the realism of that was really important to me."
According to Barker, the most tragic element of Obsession is not the possession that takes over Nikki, but rather Bear's refusal to give up on an artificial and abusive relationship he built in his head. Instead of earning Nikki's love naturally, Bear had practically stripped away her free will, turning her into a hollow, dangerous extension of his own desires.
Barker told TIME, "Any time you wish for something, it's probably going to be selfish," and emphasized that the true message of the film is "Love should be earned. Anything that's not that probably isn't going to work out."
