From an internet creepypasta, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms is set to hit the big screen!

One of the most anticipated horror adaptations of its time, the movie follows a mysterious disappearance tied to a hidden doorway in a furniture showroom. As it pulls people into a surreal dimension, they encounter infinite, empty yellow rooms and buzzing fluorescent lights that create a creeping sense of dread.

For a full cinematic experience of this psychological horror, here’s where to watch Backrooms online and how to use some of the best VPN services if it isn’t available in your region.

Where to Stream Backrooms

Backrooms is scheduled for release on May 29, 2026, in the US. After its theatrical release, it is expected to stream online.

Streaming Details

  • HBO Max
  • Estimated release window: August–November

The reason we know this is that A24 films primarily stream on HBO Max due to an exclusive multi-year “Pay-1” output deal, meaning their new movies typically arrive on the platform shortly after their theatrical release.

It may be available as early as August or as late as November, as it often takes three to six months after theatrical release for a new film to reach streaming, depending on distribution agreements. In the meantime, the film is expected to become available for digital rental or purchase first.

Rent or Purchase Options (potentially)

Backrooms may become available for rent or purchase one to three months following its theatrical run, depending on distribution deals.

How Did Kane Parsons Turn Backrooms Into an A24 Movie

Kane Parsons becomes A24’s youngest feature director as he brings his viral YouTube series to the big screen for the studio, a project that began development in early 2022.

As the film will be very different from what fans are used to, the young director explained his creative approach. He told The Hollywood Reporter:

  • “It does take more of a specific approach, where you’re seeing it through the lens of these specific characters–these individuals living these atomized, lonely lives. In the film, there is rarely a moment where there’s more than one or two characters on screen at a given time. It’s a pretty lonely film.”

Parsons even learned to use the software Blender and worked together with cinematographer Jeremy Cox to maintain continuity with the original web series.

He also described the film’s set as “huge,” featuring “30,000 square feet of actual backrooms” designed to immerse people in a disorienting reality.

Talking about what Backrooms represents, he continued:

  • “The backrooms, to me, has felt aligned with what happens when someone goes through sensory deprivation on an individual level—you go into an empty room, and the body and nervous system, which need stimulation so badly when deprived of it, start to find noise and information in the pattern of the walls, and begin to take that noise more seriously than it normally would. It raises its threshold of what it’s willing to accept.”
