Hello, you. If you're like one of the many avid fans who are patiently waiting for the return of Joe Goldberg aka Penn Badgley in the hit Netflix original show, You, you're not alone.
The last time we saw Joe, he was lurking the streets of Paris in the hopes of stalking locating his lost lover, Marienne Bellamy (played by Tati Gabrielle). Before that, he murdered his scheming wife, Love Quinn (played by Victoria Pedretti).
And with You Season 4, the idea of Joe taking his obsessive and murdering tendencies internationally sounds exciting. Plus, who knows who Joe will come across in this season.
If you're waiting for an update on the fourth installment, here's what we know about it so far.
You Season 4 Release Date News
It's been a while since we last saw Joe on our TV screens for a third season. And in what was supposed to be a happy ending for the show, season 3 spiraled things out of control and gave an unexpected twist to Joe and Love's love story.
So now we're left wondering what will happen to our favorite serial killer and his hunt for the one who got away?
A month after You Season 3 was released, the writers of the show revealed that they have started with the production of You Season 4:
"Welcome to the season 4 writers' room, now officially open for business."
And months after that, the official You Instagram page shared that they have officially started production in London.
There was even a TikTok clip of Badgley walking through the streets of London. The clip shows Badgley walking through Royal Holloway at the University of London.
In August 2022, it was reported that production had wrapped up filming.
But as for its release date, Netflix has not yet given an update on this. The show will be entering post-production status now and will likely be there between 4 to 6 months. This means that You Season 4 could likely be released between December 2022 to February 2023. The December 2022 release date, however, is a bit of a stretch. The safest bet is an early 2023 release date.
The release date was finally announced at the Netflix Tudum 2022 event. The show will be separated into two parts. You Season 4 Part 1 will be released on February 10, 2023. Part 2 will be released a month later, March 10, 2023.
In November 2022, Netflix announced that the release date of You Season 4 will be moved a day earlier. This means that the new release date of You Season 4 Part 1 will be on February 9, 2023.
The release date of You Season 4 Part 2 will also be moved to March 9, 2023.
You Season 4 Story
You has always been based on Caroline Kepnes' best-selling novels of the same title. And ever since it first aired, it has consistently asked the same question-- "What would you for love?"
In You Season 3, this was taken literally as Joe did the unthinkable for Love. The season ended with Joe murdering his overly jealous wife, abandoning their baby to another family, and even faked his own death. Then he assumed another identity as he went around Paris looking for Marienne. While this was the last scene we saw on the finale of season 3, production for You Season 4 is actually taking place in London.
There is no other plot details available at this time and we don't actually know why the show is filming there instead. A TikTok footage of Badgley going around campus dressed like a professor. Perhaps his new identity as Nick is a professor at Royal Holloway.Ā
Apart from taking his serial killing spree internationally, Badgley shared with Entertainment Tonight that "there is a different format" but a similar tone. And "it's almost like we're shifting the genre slightly. And I think it works."
It's a good change of pace for the show since we've seen the same format three times now-- guy meets girl, guy stalks girl, girl falls for guy, and guy kills girl. In You Season 4, things will be a little different since we won't see what's coming next. And just like the previous seasons, we slowly start to understand Joe and his trauma.
One thing to look forward to in You Season 4 is Penn Badgley's directorial debut. This was shared by showrunner Sera Gamble in an Instagram post: "We hired a new director this season but he seems to know the show really, really well."
You Season 4 Cast: Who's Returning for Season 4
In the finale of You Season 3, Joe left Madre Linda for good to start a new life abroad. And this likely means we'll be introduced to a slew of new characters in the fourth season.
So far, the only ones that have been confirmed to return for the fourth installment are Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg (or Nick in this season) and Tati Gabrielle as Marienne Bellamy.
But at this point, we don't know whether Gabrielle will be in the show throughout the season or just a guest star. She told ScreenRant: "I really would love to see her foil Joe. On one hand, I would love to see her foil Joe, and then, on the other hand, I'd love to see what it could be like for Marienne to just have a good life. She struggled for so long. And yeah, I want her to have a happy ending."
We've also been treated to some bits of information on the new cast joining You Season 4. These include:
- Charlotte Ritchie (as Kate)
- Lukas Gage (as Adam)
- Tilly Keeper (as Lady Phoebe)
- Amy Leigh Hickman (as Nadia)
- Ed Speelers (as Rhys)
- Niccy Lin (as Sophie)
- Aidan Cheng (as Simon)
- Stephen Hagan
- Ben Wiggins (as Roald)
- Eve Austin (as Gemma)
- Ozioma Whenu (as Blessing)
- Dario Coates (as Connie)
- Sean Pertwee
- Brad Alexander
- Alison Pargeter (as Dawn)
- Adam James (as Elliot)
Kate (played by Charlotte Ritchie) will likely be Joe's newest obsession. But compared to the other women who Joe has been fascinated by, she is able to sniff out Joe's dark secret and according to Deadline: "not only immediately dislikes him, she strongly suspects him, she strongly suspects something about the man is not what he seems."
Meanwhile, Lukas Gage will play the role of Adam, who is Joe's rich kid nemesis in the fourth season.
You Season 4 Trailer
Right now, there is no trailer out yet for You Season 4. One way of marketing the upcoming season is by sending a letter to Cardi B. The rapper posted a photo on Twitter of a black cap and a letter from his crazed fan, Joe Goldberg.
Cardi B teased how Joe was able to find her new address. The rapper then pitched an idea on how the fourth season should go. There was even a petition to get the rapper on the show.
Sadly, Badgley told Entertainment Tonight that they were "trying to make something happen." But there's no word of any development on this from either party. Maybe we'll see the rapper in the fifth season, then?
Netflix released an announcement video with clips from previous seasons. You can check out the announcement teaser for You Season 4 here:
