Now that the final episode of Stranger Things has aired, fans are wondering what's next for the franchise, especially the spinoff shows that they can look forward to.
In the last few years, Netflix and The Duffer Brothers have been working to expand the franchise and explore more of the lore and mythology of the series in spinoff projects. While the story of our favorite characters in Hawkins has ended, it's also the beginning of a bigger Stranger Things universe that fans are excited to unfold.
What Are the Upcoming Stranger Things Spinoff Projects?
So far, only one Stranger Things spinoff series is currently slated for release soon, which is the animated prequel Stranger Things: Tales from '85.
The story takes place between the events of the second and third seasons. Set in 1985, it’s a freezing winter in Hawkins, and our heroes are about to embark on an epic journey where "the original characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town," the logline reads.
The Duffer Brothers are involved as executive producers of the series, while Flying Bark worked on the animation.
However, the main cast from the series won't be reprising their roles. Instead, the beloved main characters will be voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Luca Diaz, Elisha “EJ” Williams, Braxton Quinney, Benjamin Plessala, Brett Gipson, Odessa A’zion, Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
A live-action spinoff series is also currently in development. However, the details are still under wraps as they are still working on the main idea of the project.
"We tried as much as possible to answer all the questions as it relates to the characters and mythology of Hawkins in the Upside Down. We're really closing the door and all that," Matt Duffer teased.
"And the spinoff, it relates in some ways, but it really is a completely different story and a completely different location with completely different actors and characters. So it's its own. It's really its own entity."
For now, fans should wait for more details regarding the spinoff projects in the coming months.
What Happened in the Final Season of Stranger Things
The final season of Stranger Things was set in the fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished, and his whereabouts and plans are unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding.

The entire main cast from the previous seasons returned to play their iconic roles one last time. The episodes were released across three volumes. The final episode aired last December 31, just in time for New Year's Eve.
